December 17-19

We made it to the last week before Christmas break! The students sure are excited about Christmas, as they should. I have enjoyed hearing the daily stories of their elves. Our elf, Jack has been pretty calm in comparison to some of the stories I have heard. I look forward to hearing about all the children's Christmas adventures.

This week, we plan to stay busy.
Monday we will finish all of our testing. We will begin reading The Polar Express in preparation to compare the movie and the book. We will discuss the characters and sequence the events of the story.

Tuesday will be a full day with our Character Award program, watching the Polar Express movie and listening to our chorus sing. Remember to wear your pajamas and bring a snack and drink. Please remember tennis shoes for recess. Mrs. Deyoung will also be visiting for storytime.

Wednesday will begin with a Nutcracker performance followed by our class parties from 9-10. Students will dismiss from class. This is a half day of school.

I hope you each have a safe and healthy holiday.

December 3-7

We had a great field trip to the Discovery Museum. The children enjoyed the stations with magnets and using their five senses. The students were also able to mix a powder with water to make snow. The Science Show was wonderful.

This week, the students will continue to be tested on their current reading levels. We will be learning about solving word problems with an unknown number in any location. We will also identify 3-D shapes. The students will continue to write informational books. We are learning how to make our own table of contents for our books.

Homework Monday and Tuesday will be word problem practice. Thursday may be practice with 3-D shapes if we have enough exposure in the classroom.

The Christmas party will be at 8:30 on December 19. Just a reminder that our party is for our class. More information will come soon.

Happy Monday! I hope your all enjoying the cooler temperatures. Please remember to send a jacket each day since the weather is getting cooler.

Turkey Project came home Friday. This is always a fun project for the children. We always write about our Turkey in class after they have decorated them. I look forward to seeing all the great ideas.

This week, we will continue learning about beginning blends and we will begin learning about ending blends in words. This is a hard first grade skill to learn. The students have difficulty hearing all of the blend. For example grow- gr sound. We will also be learning different strategies to solve word problems.
